Art Direction

As art director on a silent queer crime short, I focused on using black and white visuals to heighten contrast and emotion—letting textures, light, and shadows carry the mood in place of color. Without dialogue, every detail had to speak: from carefully curated costumes that hinted at character and era, to handwritten letters I created to help tell the story visually. The process was intimate and hands-on, blending design, storytelling, and a love for classic cinema aesthetics.

For the horror short about a cursed doll, art direction was all about creating a believable, unsettling world that felt lived-in and quietly off. The most important element was finding the perfect doll—something that felt eerie without being over-the-top, with just the right balance of charm and menace. From there, I focused on sourcing antique furniture and props that would subtly amplify the unease, and securing a location that had the right natural decay and atmosphere to let the horror feel grounded and real.

Design is thinking made visual.

"A lot of times there were big mistakes, but I would show the art director and he'd say, Yeah, let's go with it. There would be a strange cropping or one girl in focus and three out or a blur. But I would end up liking the mistakes and incorporating them into my work."

Deborah Turbeville

"Design is where science and art break even."
